While computers and digital technologies play a central role in the development and utilization of the skills the more essential skills for the 21st century learning in occupations relate not just to the application of technology but more importantly to the ability to engage in independent critical thinking and a high level of problem solving often using technology. [00:02:32] So essentially what is being said here is that the more that we have access to technology and information on a daily basis the more we are going to need critical thinking skills in order to break down problems and to be more analytical. Techniques like the Corson Method allow us to develop these critical high level problem solving skills. [00:02:55] One problem is that many college and university students expect to understand concepts right out of the gate. If they do not understand a concept immediately they get frustrated and immediately ask the professor for help. If a concept doesnt make sense right away they seem to feel panicky or it initiates feelings of stress. Unfortunately this is just not the way to solve problems. [00:03:23] So lets talk about the Corson method. The Corson technique break problems down into reasonable and analytical questions. It involves breaking a question down into multiple components which are easily understood. I first learned about this technique through the YouTube for Thomas Frank from CollegeInfoGeek. Here are some steps to implement the Corson Method into your routine. [00:03:51] If you are facing a complex problem, break it down into smaller components. If you get stuck, ask yourself what is it that I do not understand. [00:04:03] Break each small question down and then ask yourself where are you getting stuck. [00:04:08] Give yourself at least 15 minutes on each component of the question in order to understand exactly where you are going wrong or what you dont understand. [00:04:18] Consult with other students after the 15 minutes. Maybe they have an idea of how to solve the problem that youre not thinking of. [00:04:25] If you are truly stuck then go to your professor after the 15 minutes be able to show your professor exactly where you are getting stuck and ask them a very specific question about the problem you are having. What youre hoping to avoid here is going to the professor right away as soon as you get the question without taking the time to break it down and understand where you might be going wrong or where there might be a misunderstanding. [00:04:54] If you use the Corson technique you are strengthening your critical thinking skills. It also has lots of other benefits too. For one your professor is going to be super happy that you are not running to them every five seconds with a new question. You wont be saving the professors time and you will help them to understand the exact context of the problem with your question. The professor well understand that you actually give a care about what they are teaching and theyll get a much better impression of you. Youre also going to be showing yourself how to learn critically and analyze information as you acquire it and in turn youre going to retain more information if you engage in problems more effectively. You are going to gain more information over time and youll retain that information for a longer period of time because youve taken some time to wrestle with it yourself by going head to head with a problem you might very well solve yourself and you might not even need so me assistance from your professor. Think about it you might even be able to help other students as they progress along their learning journey. [00:06:01] When you engage fully in a question you are actually exercising muscles in your brain that is going to help you to learn and to practice those critical thinking skills over time. And these are going to be strengthened as you progress through your university degree and when you move into the workplace. The motion of glaciers, which is essentially the motion of ice down the slopes due to gravity, can be due to two mechanisms: internal deformation of the ice due to high pressure exerted by the ice layers above and; basal sliding of the ice along the ground (Glaciers Overview 3). Basal sliding means that the glaciers move by sliding along the landscape at their base. This happens because when the temperatures are warmer, the bases of the glaciers thaw, which creates a thin water film. This type of motion usually happens with temperate glaciers which form at comparatively warmer temperatures. Surging glaciers follow a cycle of high speed ice flow, followed by low speed ice flow. Tidewater glaciers are the glaciers which end in the sea with a grounded ice-cliff from which icebergs are discharged. This has been proved by multiple case studies done by scientists on different glaciers of each type. Some of these are as below: 1. Variegated glacier ââ¬â This is a surge type of glacier in Alaska. The study of its dynamics was done by Humphrey and Raymond, who collected the data related to its erosion and sediment deposits. They found that the glacial sliding power per unit bed area was a product of the sliding velocity and the basal shear stress. While this simple formula is still to be found true in case of other glaciers, the relation between the glacial slide and basal motion cannot be ignored n(Hallet Anderson 6) 2. Trapridge glacier ââ¬â This is again a surge type glacier located in Yukon Territory in Canada. The movement of this glacier is also attributed to basal sliding. A study of the glacier shows a thin permeable layer below the glacier (Flowers Clarke 4). Many research projects were carried out to study the glacier. One of the researchers Clarke in 1976 proposed that the motion of the glacier was due to basal ice sliding, and the idea was further strengthened by Fowler who in 2001 proposed a mathematical formulation based on the same idea (Frappe 9) 3. Hubbard Glacier ââ¬â This is the largest temperate tidewater glacier. It is located in Alaska (Motyka Truffel 1). The movement of this glacier into the sea has been a part of extensive research studies. A measurement of the surface ice velocity was taken and compared with the ice thickness. The results showed that the motion was due to basal sliding (Motyka Truffel 12) 4. Columbia Glacier ââ¬â This is a retreating tidewater type glacier located in south-central costal Alaska. A study of the motion of this glacier showed a large distance of travel combined with short period speed variations, both of which are characteristic of basal motion. F. Scott, Fitsgerald was an American short story writer and novelist famous forhis depictions of the Jazz Age(the 1920s), his most brilliant novel work being The GreatGatsby(1925). He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on sept. 24, 1896 and died inHollywood, California on December 21, 1940. His private life, with his wife, Zelda, inboth America and France, became almost as celebrated as his novels. Fitsgerald was theonly son of an aristocrat father, who was the author of the star spangle banner. Fitzgeraldspent most of time with his wife, latter in their relationship they moved to france where hebegan to write his most brilliant novel, The Great Gatsby. All of his divided nature is inthis novel, the native midwestener afir with the possibilities of every Americans dream in OLSON 2its hero, Jay Gatsby, and the compassionate princeton gentlemen in its narrator, NickCarraway. The Great Gatsby is the most profoundly American novel of its time(Houghton). Fitzgerald had an intensely romantic imagination, what he once called aheightened sensitivity to the promises of life, and he rushed into experience determined torealize those promises. Latter on in Fitzgeralds life, he started to drink very heavily andbecame very unhappy. In 1930 his wife had a mental breakdown and in 1932 another,from which she never recovered. With its failure and his despair over Zelda, Fitzgeraldwas close to becoming an incurable alcoholic. He surpassed becoming an alcoholicthough, and moved out west to become a Hollywood screenwriter were he met his newwife Sheilah Graham, but he never forgot about Zelda and his daughterScotti. (Johnson, 384). The Great Gatsby is an excellent review on how fitzgerald preceived his life to be,in the same sense that he also was very wealthy. Gatsby, in this novel is the mistirieswealthy man that lives in the big house across the lake from Tom and Daisy Buchanann. There would always be some type of party going on at his house, but for some reason henever attended to them, he would always watch from his window. Nick Caraway isDaisys cousin who comes to visit, Nick needs a place to stay, so he finds an ad for aguest cottage that Mr. Jay Gatsby owns. After Nick has moved in Jay and Nick becomepretty close friends. Jordan has always wondered who The Great Gatsby was, so sheuses Nick to find out more about him. As the story goes on, there are some odd thingsthat Fitsgerald relates to the story as important things. These important things make youreally think about what it means to the story. The Automobile in The Great Gatsby is avery big topic for the conclution of the story. What we have in The G reat Gatsby is acreative manipulation of the automobile as symbol and image to accomplish a variety ofends (OMeara, 74).OMeara goes on to say that when Fitzgerald accentuatesmechanism and minimizes aesthetics, he depersonalizes vehicles and underscores the OLSON 3behavior of their drivers. The existing criticism on automobiles in The Great Gatsbyusually centers on one or the other of these two functions.(OMeara, 75). The result ofthe car is that it ends up killing Myrtle. Kenneth and Irving Saposnik discuss theautomobile imagery from a technological standpoint. Knodt asserts that all of the novel symbols of technology automobiles, trains, and telephones are connected withdestruction and evil (Saposnik, 131). I believe in this theory, that vehicles are a result evilin almost every movie. In this case the evil is the Blue Coupe sedan that ends up killingMyrtle. The other thing that sticks out to me is the billboard that has the two eyes on itwith glasses. This board is referred to M r. Wilson as the eyes of god, he believes that theycan see everything and when the car ends up killing his wife Myrtle, he tells people thatgod saw what happened. A footnote for the line in Andrew Turnnbulls edition of TheLetters of F. Scott Fitzgerald(1963)describes the dust jacket as showing two huge eyes,intended to be those of Daisy Fay, brooding over New York City, and this had beenFitsgerald s inspiration for the eyes of Dr. T. J. Eckleburg(Turnbull, 166). The brief exegesis examines the imagery of cats and dogs in Scott Fitzgeralds jazzage novel, The Great Gatsby. Toward the end of the novel, Nick Caraway refers to thehot summer days on Long Island as dog-days(Kehul, 118). John Kehul goes on tomention that many of the characters in the novel are portrayed in canine terms. Theycynically, in the sense of the Greek root kynikos, meaning dog-like. Their bites,particularly in relationship to the main character, Gatsby, become worse then theirbarks. In contrast to this canine eleme nt, Gatsby has a heightened sensitivity(120). In The Great Gatsby I did notice a lot of the characters mentioning dogs or phrasing oneanother as you old dog you,. Myrtle mentions to Tom (the man she is having an affairwith) that she would like a dog. I believe that Fitzgerald resembles these dogs as a symbolof affection. Canine imagery first appears in chapter one, when Nick casually tells thereader that he once owned a dog. He lists his possessions: an old dodge, a finish woman OLSON 4who cooks and cleans for him, and his dog. I had a dogat least I had him a few daysuntil he ran away(124). Almost forty years after the book was written, ErnestHemmingway recalls Fitzgerald giving him a copy of The Great Gatsby: It had a garishdust jacket and I remember being embarrassed by the violence, bad taste and slippery lookof it. It looked like the book jacket for a book of bad science fiction. Scott told me not tobe put of by it, that it had to with a billboard along the highway in Long Islan d that wasimportant in the story. He said that he liked the jacket, but now how didnt like it. I tookit offto read the book (feast 176).According to Hemmingway, the cover of the bookonly had to do with the billboard and had already fallen out of favor with theauthor(179). I believe that the cover of The Great Gatsby is a unique one, in a way thatpeople really would believe things like that if they never had any type of religionbackground or were just messed up in the head. As I was explaining earlier in the paper about all the characters, I was mentioningthings about Nick Carraway. Nick Carraway is also the narrator of the novel, he isprobably they most sufficient character in the novel, meaning that he is always relayinginformation to others rather than getting involved in the mischief. What I mean is, that,the affairs between Tom and Myrtle, and Daisy and Gatsby. Nick knows just abouteverything about everyone and he is the newest person in town. I think that Fitzgerald putlike thi s because, Nick had no other meaning to the story if he didnt get involved withthe secrets that were going on. Near the end though, Nick is clueless as to what is goingon with Myrtle and Tom until the night of the accident when Myrtle runs out in front ofthe speeding yellow cadilac. Myrtle had thought that Tom was driving the car, and so shedashed in front of it because she wanted to leave with Tom and get away from herhusband that was not to rich or smart like Tom was.In The Great Gatsby, the fact thatthe billboard is only mentioned once or twice in the film, but it so crucial to how the resultof the ending is. Fitzgerald is trying to point out that this billboard is the point were OLSON 5everything takes place, like, the eyes looking down on the two cars going to party and thatthey are always looking at Mr. Wilson. When Mr. Wilsons wife (Myrtle) dies he is shockand is looking for answers to what happened. As OMeara points out earlier, cars are ameans of destruction and evil. In tw o cases this is true. The blood along with tissue debris is called menses. Menstruation lasts for 3-4 days. Menstruation takes place 14 days after the ovulation. Again 14 days after menstruation, there is fresh ovulation. Both these processes stop once pregnancy had set in. There are post-fertilization changes like, mplantation after fertilization the reproductive organs are directed towards a different set of activities. As the fertilized egg goes down the oviduct, it going through mitotic cell division, it is a nonstop process, but for our convenience we divide the post-fertilization events in to a number of stages. When the cell forms a mass of cells there is no space within the group, itââ¬â¢s called the morula stage. The cells of morula rearrange in a manner to leave some space. This stage is called blastula; therefore it is blastula which is embedded in the uterus. This process is called implantation. The wall of the uterus is thick and its wall has muscles, glands and blood capillaries. As the fertilized egg erodes into the uterine wall, there is some erosion of blood capillary. As a result the blood comes out and the blastula gets nutrition from that blood. This will develop in to fetus and finally a baby. When the blastula implanted in the uterus of the mother, it continues to grow by cell division. There important layers of cells develop. These are the germ layers. Membranes are developed and the outermost membrane of the embryo is formed and now called chorion. The second covering of the embryo is amnion, which immediately surrounds the fetus and protects it. Within this covering there is an amniotic fluid which protects the embryo from shocks as well as any major trauma. There is an intimate contact between the blood vessels of the uterus and that of the fetus through the placenta. Umbilical cord serves as a link between the fetus and maternal circulation. When the embryonic development is completed, the baby is born. The baby is pushed out by the contraction of the uterine muscles; this is called birth. Somewhere between 45-55 years the ovary stops releasing the egg. We can say that the ovary has become nonfunctional. Menopause is a normal part of a womans aging process. The ovaries stop releasing eggs, and menstrual periods stop. Most women experience menopause around age 50. Before to menopause, menstrual cycles often become off. The ovaries are less active to stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. To try to make up for the decreased response, the body produces MORE of these hormones. The level of these hormones will decrease. The hormones produced by the ovaries include the different forms of estrogen, progesterone, and prolactin. The ovaries continue to produce small amounts of testosterone and some estrogen. The hormones produced by the pituitary gland are also decreased. Because hormone levels fall, changes occur in the entire reproductive system. The vaginal walls become less elastic, thinner, and less rigid. The vagina becomes smaller and shorter. When menstruation stops in a woman, it is taken for granted that she will not be able to have a child any more. Ending of menstruation is called menopause.

The selfish gene theory Essay Example The selfish gene theory Paper The selfish gene theory Paper Therefore, if people acted purely in their self-interest as relayed in the often misunderstood purest form of the selfish gene theory, this person would not contribute to the common account in the first place and would reap the rewards of everyone elseââ¬â¢s contribution. Contributions to the common fund started at approximately 50% of the total points of each player but this decreased over the course of the game as some people put less in the common account. Justifications for the decline in cooperation were that the only way to punish people who were not contributing to the common account was to decline to contribute to that account also. It begs the question as to how sustainable cooperative and social behaviours are without a significant deterrent to behaving selfishly. When this game was conducted with opportunity to heavily punish non contributors by using their own points to deduct from those of the non-contributing players this was consistently selected. This pattern of behaviour meant that cooperation no longer decreased over the rounds so cooperative behaviour was maintained by reward and punishment as it often is in society. More recent neurobiological evidence supports the notion that even this seemingly altruistic behaviour by the actor is selfish at a genetic level, De Quervain et al (2004) found that when a person punishes another for non-cooperative behaviour the dorsal striatum is stimulated and as this is the circuitry involved in reward-related activity there is a direct fitness benefit being bestowed by this behaviour to the actor. Additionally, there are indirect benefits for the group to which the actor belongs as this behaviour increases their survival chances and productivity. Therefore the overall fitness benefits to the personââ¬â¢s genes through the ultimate maintenance of the group and societal norms which help to preserve that group outweighs the personal sacrifices made to maintain this system of cooperative and social fairness which has fitness benefits for those who engage in it (Hamilton, 1964, 1975). If selfish behaviour increases a personsââ¬â¢ overall fitness then it would seem obvious that genes which promote selfishness should increase their presence in the gene pool and that altruistic genes would therefore be outbred. This would mean that Dawkins (1976) explanation for cooperative and social behaviour would be fundamentally flawed. However, game theory has shown how important the combination of those who behave selfishly and those who behave in a seemingly altruistic way is to the evolution of the genes that promote these behaviours. A game called ââ¬Ëprisoners dilemmaââ¬â¢ demonstrates that when two people behave altruistically they increase the overall fitness of both parties and hence the gene that promotes this behaviour is likely to survive and be replicated. When both parties behave selfishly both decrease their overall fitness which makes the gene responsible less likely to survive and be replicated and when one partner behaves selfishly it is their own fitness that will increase but if there is discrimination from those who have the altruistic genes in their willingness to interact with those carrying the selfish gene then this explains why the population is not overcome by those carrying the selfish gene. Dawkins purports that consciousness has evolved to be able to override the influence of the genes and that the more executive decisions are made at the helm of this consciousness. It is the relationship between the genes and consciousness that determine how a person will behave and the influence of the environment and its culture shapes consciousness more than genes do. Dawkins acknowledged a meme as a unit of culture that can be passed from person to person at a much faster rate than genes would be and therefore memes create rules for cooperative and social behaviour and these rules help to maintain systems of cooperation by punishing those who do not engage fairly in social interactions. Therefore where behaviours cannot be explained by genes they are explained by memes and Cartesian-dualism. Because ultimately genes are primarily concerned with their own replication, they influence people to behave in ways that are most likely to meet this need; altruistic and cooperative behaviour has evolved as a consequence of its success at replicating itself and therefore cooperative and social behaviour is explained by the SGT as having evolved at the level of the genes through selfish means. Cooperative and social behaviour at the level of the organism is therefore only a mechanism to ensure that the needs of the genes are being met. The survival of the fittest is therefore not a competition for resources and advantageous selfish behaviour but it is an enhanced chance of survival and reproduction bestowed on those who behave in efficient ways such as through cooperative and social behaviours (Margulis Lovelock, 1974) Conclusively, Dawkins SGT appears to be able to offer adequate explanations for cooperative and social behaviours that enhance the fitness of the actor and those who share the same genes. If the fitness is not directly or indirectly enhanced with an immediate effect then this can be explained as having a lifetime fitness benefit by this same theory but it is worth noting that measuring lifetime fitness benefits is difficult to do which limits this explanation. The weaker the genetic connection between the actor and the recipient the weaker the theory becomes when offering explanations for cooperative and social behaviours, especially as the behaviour of the actor becomes increasingly altruistic. Therefore from the perspective of the SGT even apparently cooperative and social behaviour at the level of the organism is always one of selfish motivation at the level of the genes; put succinctly, ââ¬Ëscratch an altruist and watch a hypocrite bleedââ¬â¢ (Ghiselin, 1974). The unemployment rate dipped over the quarter by 0.1% to 2% in June, while the rate for citizens decline by 0.2% to 2.8% and 3% respectively. The total number of jobs created in the second quarter of the year has risen to a total of 31,700 jobs, which is higher than the same period last year. A total of 58,900 jobs were created in the first half of the year, compared with 53,100 on the previous year which increases by 5,900 of jobs this year. Service sector has a higher employment rate compared to last year where there was a gain of 19,300 jobs, an increase of 2,000 more vacancies in the service sector, which also includes manufacturing sector where 4,700 jobs were created. Three in five residents laid off in the first quarter of the year found a job by June, shows an improvement of 50% by the previous cohort in March. These people usually do not have skills that are not needed nor have a specialized background which does not fit the market or cannot be used in the current market. It is difficult for workers to learn a new set of skills or to move on to an area whereby they need to start afresh. Policies should be put in place to prevent such unemployment. Structural unemployment is the most common form of unemployment in the market. Factors that result in structural unemployment Age Educational level Some of the workers may be too young or too old for the job requirements. While some do not have a very high education level may have a different view from the employers. High educated workers may not be interested jobs that provide them with low wages and long working hours. How I’Ve Changed over the Past Year
How I Have changed over the past year? Humans are as changeable as the weather. Or perhaps a more frequent changer. And being one myself Iââ¬â¢m no different. Every night when I look back to the previous day I see no change. But when I look back to the year that has just passed, I do see the difference. The experiences I went through changed me to a better or may be something close to a reformation. Nevertheless Iââ¬â¢m not the same anymore I was always known to be short-tempered and egoistic. But last year one incident really changed the way I was and thought. My sudden fluctuations in temper made me lose a lot of friends and the loneliness I was in taught me to be more friendly and patient. My friends always knew how to react to my rudeness but unfortunately I forgot my new friends were not accustomed to it. I met some buddies in a friendââ¬â¢s birthday party, last year, who were more than just casual acquaintances. One of them dropped coke over my new silk dress and that did it! I started yelling at her without noticing I am ruining the party. To my surprise the girl started crying and ran away while I was left standing clueless. The birthday boy came up and said ââ¬Å"I think you better go wash yourself, Sunnu, before the spots get dry. Iââ¬â¢ll call you later. â⬠He never called and probably would not have if I had not met him in a mall a few days later. ââ¬Å"Yes, I didnââ¬â¢t. But neither did you. â⬠He answered when I asked why he did not call. ââ¬Å"But you said ââ¬Ëyouââ¬â¢ will call. ââ¬Å"Yes, but donââ¬â¢t you think you were at fault and should have taken the first step and said sorry? â⬠I was very confused. I did not know what he meant. Why should ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢ be sorry? It was ââ¬Ëherââ¬â¢ fault, not mines. But now I know why he did not. I was too egoistic to even think of being sorry, let alone saying it. She did a mistake unintentionally, but I did a bigger mistake by not doing what I should have done ââ¬â forgive and forget. I realized this when one day one of my friends told me ââ¬Å"Sunnu, you never accept the fact that even ââ¬Ëyouââ¬â¢ can make mistakes. You are always too angry to even think what other people might feel at your choice of words. â⬠I was lonely. My friends had left me trying every possible ways to make me realize. But this lone feeling gave me time to think over everything and that is when I realized how wrong I was. One day, one week, one month and in a year I changed myself. I was a reformed Sunayna. I was better and the proof is all the old friends and many new ones happily smiling on the pictures in my ââ¬Å"My Friendsâ⬠album on Facebook.

Burger King Ad Analysis Essay
In June of 2009, Burger King released an advertisement for the ââ¬Å"BK Super Seven Incherâ⬠for a limited promotion in Singapore. The sexual message that this ad aims to convey is not so much hidden or subliminal as it is blatantly obvious. Not many would be able to simply glance at this ad and then go about their day. Men and women alike are drawn to the ad because they are either attracted to it or offended by it. Effective advertising usually triggers some kind of powerful emotion within its audience. In that respect, this advertisement succeeds with flying colors. Whether it is because of feelings of disgust or attraction, the images in this ad are difficult to ignore which is exactly what the advertiser envisioned happening. Although very ineffective, this ad is still being analyzed today which is quite significant. Burger Kingââ¬â¢s advertisement effectively creates and manipulates the narrative, layout, and copy to create a strong reaction to sexism and vulgarity wit hin its audience causing them to only focus on the nature of the ad, not how much they want to buy the product. The ad, through its imagery and text, aims to create a fantasy where all a man has to do is hold a burger and young, attractive women will want to have sex with them. Even if men do not consciously think this way, the idea it is still in the back of their minds. In an attempt to create an effective subtext with these images and words, the ad dehumanizes both men and women. On one hand, the woman in the ad is seen as an object who is only useful in sexual situations ââ¬â hence the focal point of her face, her mouth which is directly in line with the burger. Many have even noted that the woman resembles a blow-up doll which further solidifies the idea of transforming women into sexual devices rather than human beings. On the other hand, a phallic idea is triggered in a manââ¬â¢s mind that to create the notion that size does matter and this ad presents it as the only thing that really does matter when it comes to attracting a woman. It gives men the impression that if they are no t well endowed, women will disregard them unless they are seen eating this burger. The prominent images of this ad cause the audience to have a strong emotional reaction to the ad whether they know it or not. The portion of the advertisement that first catches the audienceââ¬â¢s eye is the image of a stunned, fairly artificial looking woman with her mouth agape to a sandwich that seems to be appearing out of nowhere. The sandwich pictured with the woman also looks much thinner and longer than the one pictured at the bottom. The image of the sandwich next to the womanââ¬â¢s mouth creates obvious phallic visualizations within the audienceââ¬â¢s minds. The adââ¬â¢s blatant allusion to oral sex causes the audience to have a strong reaction upon seeing it. The image suggests that upon eating this sandwich, every adjacent woman will be rendered helpless at the sight of a man holding a seven inch burger. The woman also seems to be looking at something out of frame beyond the sandwich. The mysterious item in the shadows that the womanââ¬â¢s eyes are fixed on adds yet another cue a man could subconsciously get by looking at the ad. This allows a man to conjure up any type of scenario within his mind from only the presence of shadows in the ad. Right below is the second-most prominent part of the ad: the words ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢ll Blow Your Mind Awayâ⬠in large font with the two largest words in that sentence being ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢ll Blow.â⬠The ad tends to two very significant aspects of a young manââ¬â¢s life: food and sex. Food is a basic human need but it is not enough to say that this sandwich will satisfy your hun ger, it must also be able to fulfill another desire. The images of this ad indirectly suggest that the sandwich will cater to a manââ¬â¢s hunger as well as his sexual frustration. Along with the suggestive images this ad presents, the words surrounding the artwork bring an equally as obvious but a much more distasteful idea to the mind. In small font at the bottom it reads: ââ¬Å"fill your desire for something long, juicy and flame-grilledâ⬠because we all know that a long cake tastes better than a short one. The fact that the sandwich is seven inches long has little to nothing to do with the quality of the sandwich but rather the visualization that this extra long burger evokes while accompanied with the images. As if that was not enough to make a man go cross-eyed, it goes on to add that the burger will make one ââ¬Å"yearn for moreâ⬠after one taste. The seemingly endless sexually suggestive elements of this ad just causes it to be mulled over in the minds of men and women alike which adds to its effectiveness not to sell a product but to keep the Burger King name in peopleââ¬â¢s heads. The name of the product in itself is also something to be considered. Without the imagery of the product it would be unclear as to what is being sold. Only in the small text do you see what this product is actually categorized under ââ¬â a burger. To someone unfamiliar to this ad, the term ââ¬Å"seven incherâ⬠could mean a plethora of items, both sexual and non-sexual. Because of the lack of distinction between food and phallus, the audience gets the wrong (or the right) impression of this product. In describing the burger in further detail, the words ââ¬Å"crispy,â⬠ââ¬Å"thick,â⬠and ââ¬Å"heartyâ⬠are used to create the idea that not only will you be attracting women from all over the globe, you will also be buying a top-of-the-line meal for the bargain price of $6.25 ââ¬â an idea any man would be mesmerized by. One long-running advertisement of a similar product could come to mind when faced with an ad centered upon the size of a sandwich ââ¬â Subwayââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Five Dollar Foot Longâ⬠campaign. Unlike the Burger King ad, the Subway ad features mainly a catchy jingle and cheery imagery. Subwayââ¬â¢s advertisers could have easily gone in the route that Burger King did and made the extra long sandwich sexual. Any company would choose not to sexualize their ads in order to avoid excluding the portion of their audience who would not be attracted to or would even be offended by such graphic images. Subway, instead, used positive and healthy imagery using athletes and generally fit people to advertise their product. In 2008, about the time the campaign for the five dollar sandwich began, the U.S. was faced with a financial crisis. As a result, Subway came up with the campaign of a cheap alternative to healthy food. As a result, a very marketable image of their product was created. A notable difference between Burger Kingââ¬â¢s ad and Subwayââ¬â¢s ad is that the ââ¬Å"BK Super Seven Incherâ⬠ad had to be taken down right after the backlash ensued; the everyday ââ¬Å"Five Dollar Foot Longâ⬠campaign was sustained until Subway was pushed to increase the price of the sandwich due to inflation. Much like an ad targeted to women of all ages that shows young, thin, energetic girls wearing fashionable clothing, this ad creates false scenarios in the minds of males about a situation that eating this burger will put them in. In the past, the appeals of Burger King ads seemed to be based on humor and were aimed towards a more universal audience. Their ads usually include the advertising mascot of the company, ââ¬Å"The King,â⬠who would often be presented in comical situations. The ad, in no way, alienated any group of people which is why it was kept. The problem in advertising today and particularly in this ad is that companies now allow their products to give off the wrong impression in order to get a rise out of people. Despite its limited release, the unnecessarily sexual nature of the ad sparked much discussion around the world. Not long after the backlash, Burger King officials released a statement expressing that the ad was not created by their principal advertising agency, but by a more independent Singapore agency. Although the ad was taken down shortly thereafter, this does not change the fact that Burger King knew what they were getting themselves into in allowing this ad to be released. Excessively sexualizing a product could mean much negative repercussions for a company. Whether Burger King thought they could sell more sandwiches this way or not, they got the publicity that they were striving for. Although the feedback that they were receiving was extremely negative, it successfully got their name in peopleââ¬â¢s minds which is considered positive for any company. Burger King, by no accident, released an overly sexual ad that could cause any consumer to think twice. In some cases, sex only sells to a point, then it becomes overkill meaning that the ad could work against them if it is deemed ââ¬Å"too sexual.â⬠Done in the right way, sexual ads are very successful but in those cases the ads are very subtle and usually focus on some kind of subliminal message. Burger Kingââ¬â¢s target audience who are predominately young males will certainly have a strong reaction to the ad but will most likely not be more inclined to buy the product after seeing it in those terms. This ad is a good example of how shock value gets attention but does not effectively sell a product.
